MATERIALITY

Materiality:  Gamble Family Gallery, Dunedin Fine Art Center, Florida
May 29, 2026 - August 16, 2026, Reception: May 29, 2026 at 6:00pm , Q&A:  May 29, 2026 at 6:30 pm

Materiality brings together ten triptychs - portrait studies and large figurative works - each painted without knowing the outcome. The works move between the psychological interior of the individual and the collective weight of bodies in crisis. Paint remains present and unapologetic throughout. Nothing is resolved. Nothing is meant to be.

"In oil on canvas, Gigurtsis allows paint to remain present and unapologetic. Forms materialize in spaces between representation and abstraction. Figures emerge only to dissolve again, inviting viewers to linger in moments of recognition and ambiguity. In this way, Materiality speaks not only to what is depicted, but to how it comes into being, where substance and image are inseparable."

Jim Gigurtsis is an international figurative artist born in Greece and based in Florida, USA. His formal training includes a summer programme at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. His practice spans portraits, large figurative works, installations, and video.

Working exclusively in oil on canvas, Gigurtsis paints without knowing the outcome - deconstructing and distorting the figure until the image resolves on its own terms. His portraits explore the psychological interior of the individual; his large figurative works place sacred narratives inside contemporary crises of migration, war, and collective suffering.

His work has been recognised with numerous awards including Best of Show at Pinellas County, First Place at South Pasadena Art Spring, and the Emerging Artist Grant from Creative Pinellas. He has exhibited extensively across Florida and the United Kingdom, and has held a part-time curatorial position at the Financial Conduct Authority in London.

Work by Gigurtsis is held in private and public collections across England, Ireland, Norway, Greece, Canada, and the USA.
